The COIN Open Days are one-day (or half-day) workshops that bring together researchers and policy analysts from the European Commission, international organisations, think tanks and the academia with scientists of the European Commission’s Competence Centre on Composite Indicators and Scoreboards (COIN) with a view to discuss together how to further improve their monitoring tools ‒ be those indicator frameworks, scoreboards, composite indicators‒ and to ensure that these tools are developed using the highest standards in composite indicator methodology.

After receiving confirmation that your request has been accepted:

  • The JRC-COIN team will share a protocol for discussion that builds on the 10-step guide of the OECD/JRC Handbook on Composite Indicators.
  • A couple of days before the COIN Open Day, you are welcome to share some background documentation on your monitoring tool with the JRC-COIN team.
  • During the COIN Open Day, you could either discuss the index/scoreboard going over the material you have shared and/or give a presentation (highly recommended).

COIN Open Day - SEEA AFF and INCA

COIN Open Day - SEEA AFF and INCA

Date of event:
Friday, May 3, 2019 - 09:30 to 12:30
Where:

Ispra, Italy

Aim:

This workshop brings together the Joint Research Centre (Land Resources Unit) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), with scientists of the European Commission’s Competence Centre on Composite Indicators and Scoreboards (COIN) with a view to discuss together how to further improve the "market component" index within the SEEA AFF-INCA integration for the crop provisioning ecosystem service framework and to ensure that it is developed using the highest standards in composite indicator methodology.

Description:

The System of Integrated Environmental and Economic Accounts Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries (SEEA AFF) and the Integrated system for Natural Capital Accounting (INCA) are both accounting frameworks that aim at integrating the System of National Accounts (SNA) by introducing valuable information on natural resources and ecosystem services.

By integrating these frameworks, it is possible to calculate indicators that connect the ecosystem side with the economy and human welfare.

We propose three indicators referring to three different steps of the accounting (Ecosystem, Economy and Society). Specifically, “the market component” (ref. Economy) is built as a Composite Indicator.

After receiving feedback during the COIN Open Day held on March 15 2019, the market component has been reprocessed.

Societal impact:

At the moment, the pilot exercise SEEA AFF-INCA only concerns European Union countries.

If accepted, the integration SEEA AFF-INCA can be replicated in all the countries covered by FAO database and contribute to sustainability assessments for both developed and developing countries.

COIN Open Day - EIT Impact Framework

COIN Open Day - EIT Impact Framework

Date of event:
Friday, May 17, 2019 - 09:30 to 17:00
Where:

Ispra, Italy

Aim:

This workshop brings together the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), EIT's Impact Framework 2021-2027, with scientists of the European Commission’s Competence Centre on Composite Indicators and Scoreboards (COIN) with a view to discuss together how to further improve the framework and to ensure that it is developed using the highest standards in composite indicator methodology.

Description:
The EIT’s next Strategic Innovation Agenda (2021 – 2027) will build on the successful results and emerging impact of the EIT to provide the European Union with a strong innovation engine that can effectively address its major challenges and give it a central place in the EU’s innovation landscape. This new strategy will be underpinned by a solid impact focused approach to delivering world-class solutions to targeted societal challenges. The EIT is currently developing its Impact Framework (2021-2027) that will include indicators for the entire impact pathway of EIT and its KICs.

Societal impact:

The foreseen EIT impact 2027 is multilayer and will encompass economic impact, impact on innovation and societal impact.

The societal impact will be specific for the societal challenges addressed by the EIT KICs and will contribute to the impact expected to be created by Horizon Europe programme’s missions. In broad lines the societal impact will include:

·         building a zero-carbon economy and climate resilient society,

·         driving digital innovation

·         securing adequate supply of energy produced in a sustainable and affordable manner

·         promoting healthy living and active ageing

·         sustainably exploring, recycling and substituting raw materials

·         securing an adequate supply of high quality food

·         creating an integrated manufacturing system

·         ensuring a smart, greener, more inclusive, and safer integrated urban mobility system.
