The COIN Open Days are one-day (or half-day) workshops that bring together researchers and policy analysts from the European Commission, international organisations, think tanks and the academia with scientists of the European Commission’s Competence Centre on Composite Indicators and Scoreboards (COIN) with a view to discuss together how to further improve their monitoring tools ‒ be those indicator frameworks, scoreboards, composite indicators‒ and to ensure that these tools are developed using the highest standards in composite indicator methodology.

COIN Open Day - Water-Energy-Food Nexus Index and Dashboard

COIN Open Day - Water-Energy-Food Nexus Index and Dashboard

Date of event:
Friday, June 7, 2019 - 09:30 to 17:00
Where:

Ispra, Italy

Aim:

This workshop brings together the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education with scientists of the European Commission’s Competence Centre on Composite Indicators and Scoreboards (COIN) with a view to discuss together how to further improve the Water-Energy-Food Nexus Index and Dashboard for South Africa and to ensure that it is developed using the highest standards in composite indicator methodology.

Description:

Many nations and regions are confronted with serious water, energy and food security challenges. Climate change is likely to exacerbate these difficulties, which will make it more difficult for these countries to meet their developmental objectives. While the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus philosophy is gaining recognition and the need for integrated planning is generally understood, few tools exist for sustainability data assessment. The need for such a tool, linked to the Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs), has been expressed by many researchers and development organisations working in this field.  The development of a WEF Nexus Index and dashboard has been developed to contribute to integrated sustainable development.

Societal impact:

This project involves the development of a WEF nexus-based framework, dashboard and composite indicator (index) that can be used (i) for assessing national progress towards the relevant SDGs (and other sector-specific indicators), and (ii) to facilitate integrated sustainability planning and policy development for nations and/or regions. The visualisation of the indicator data will provide a representation of the countries’ and/or region’s progress towards integrated resource security and the alleviation of livelihood vulnerability, while also highlighting actual or potential trade-offs, and synergies, that exist between these three resource sectors.
