The COIN Open Days are one-day (or half-day) workshops that bring together researchers and policy analysts from the European Commission, international organisations, think tanks and the academia with scientists of the European Commission’s Competence Centre on Composite Indicators and Scoreboards (COIN) with a view to discuss together how to further improve their monitoring tools ‒ be those indicator frameworks, scoreboards, composite indicators‒ and to ensure that these tools are developed using the highest standards in composite indicator methodology.

COIN Open Day - INFORM Global Risk Index and Global Crisis Severity Index

COIN Open Day - INFORM Global Risk Index and Global Crisis Severity Index

Date of event:
Friday, October 11, 2019 - 02:30 to 17:30
Where:

Ispra, Italy

Aim:

This workshop brings together the INFORM Global Risk Index and Global Crisis Severity Index, with scientists of the European Commission’s Competence Centre on Composite Indicators and Scoreboards (COIN) with a view to discuss together how to further improve the index and to ensure that it is developed using the highest standards in composite indicator methodology.

Description:

INFORM is a multi-stakeholder forum for developing shared analysis to help to manage humanitarian crises and disasters. The JRC is the scientific and technical leader of INFORM.

The INFORM Global Risk Index has been developed by JRC in the 2013, and since then has been published every year.

The INFORM Global Crisis Severity Index (GCSI) is a composite indicator to objectively measure and compare the severity of humanitarian crises and disasters globally. The conceptual framework of the GCSI has been developed collaboratively by a group of INFORM’s partners, including the JRC. Now the JRC has been asked to validate and document the methodology.

Societal impact:

INFORM has partners from across the UN system, donors, civil society, academic/technical community and private sector.

The INFORM Global Risk Index (GRI) is a widely recognised and valuable tool that supports decision-making of INFORM partners and others. The INFORM risk analysis process and methodology has been extended to the regional and country level.

Over the last two years, INFORM partners have been working to develop a Global Crisis Severity Index (GCSI). The Index aims to contribute to decisions on the allocation of resources in a way that is proportionate with crisis severity so that resources are used most effectively.
